A few months ago I found some Kodachrome and Ektachrome slides at my dad’s place from his days in the Navy, and decided to start scanning them in.  As I am still experiencing scanner/driver issues, the process has been rather slow and tedious and I have ran out of time to do more.

The advantage of it taking so long to work on each image is that I have had time to contemplate the images, and try to wrap my head around the fact that these young men are now old men, some even dead, but most of all they are not the same people they were in these pictures.  They had lives ahead of them, now their days are behind them.  I’m well aware that I am not reflecting on anything that hasn’t been reflected upon before, but to have a personal connection, and to see these young men appear on my screen really drove in reality.

I haven’t told dad  I took the slides yet, the aim is to scan them all eventually and to put them into a book for him to keep.   In the mean time, here’s what I’ve done.

Ektachrome, May 1967

Kodachrome, April 1967
